Red foxes

The organism I chose to research is the red fox. Its scientific name is Vulpes vulpes. Red foxes are mammals. I chose red foxes because they live in Vermont and Vermont is awesome.

Red foxes live in forests in dens. They can also live in the desert, even near the cities. You can find them at VFFS in a den behind the sheep pen.

Red foxes eat squirrels, raccoons, mice, gophers, opossum, coyotes and bears eat adult red foxes and owls and hawks eat red fox kits. Red foxes are omnivores which means they eat meat and plants. They eat fruit and berries in the summer and rodents in the winter.

Red foxes live about 5 years in the wild.  They can live up to 10 to 12 years in captivity.  They live alone or in small family groups and usually have four to six kits a year.

Here are some cool facts about red foxes. They wrapped their tail around his body when they sleep to help keep themselves warm. They use their tails to balance while they are moving. They have great hearing; they can hear mice moving under the snow.
