snowshoe hares

Snowshoe hares are very cool. I chose them because I think they are cute, and because I have a rabbit at home. I really want to study hares so I can know more about rabbits. Snowshoe hare's scientific name is Lepus americanus and they are mammals.

Here are some cool facts. Snowshoe hares have excellent hearing. They are very good swimmers, and they can hop very fast. Hares are different from rabbits. Hare babies are born on the ground with fur and they are born ready to hop but rabbits babies are born underground with no fur at all and they are helpless. Another interesting fact is they usually eat plants, but they also surprisingly eat decaying meat.

Hares change color in the winter. Snowshoe hares are white and in the spring they are brown. They do this by shedding their fur. Snowshoe hares’ predators are lynxes. They remember when they get chased by predators and they have less babies when they grow up.

Snowshoe hares live about 5 years in the wild. You can find them by looking for little bits of leaves that are gone from trees on low down branches. You can also find them by looking for footprints and by their scat.
